There’s no point in using stale bread for pudding if it’s just going to go to waste because you can’t eat the whole dessert. Fortunately, baking the bread gives it new life and once it’s cooked it freezes surprisingly well.

Assuming you’ve made this bread pudding from scratch, the first thing to keep in mind before freezing is that it needs to be completely chilled. Room temperature. Never put anything hot in your freezer, let alone bread.

If you made a sauce to go with your pudding, keep it separate. The sauce can be frozen in any freezer safe container, just make sure you leave enough room for it to expand a bit.

To freeze and thaw evenly, it’s best to store your pudding in individual pieces. This will help it freeze faster and also make it easier to scoop out a single serving when you want a little treat for yourself.

Wrap the individual servings in plastic wrap, and if you are very concerned about the well-being of your bread pudding, you can wrap it again in aluminum foil.

You can put it in your freezer like this, or you can put all the individual packages together and put them in a single freezer-safe Tupperware container. This will prevent them from getting squashed in the freezer.

Tupperware containers are also easier to label than aluminum foil, and it’s always good to put a date on everything you freeze. Frozen bread pudding will stay fresh for up to 3 months if you store it carefully.

A word of caution about store-bought bread pudding

If you’ve bought your bread pudding and are dealing with leftovers, the question will be whether or not it has been sauteed. If not, that’s fine, just follow the same steps above!

If it has sauce on it, unfortunately, freezing and thawing will likely make it a soggy mess. Better to finish it in the next few days.

You can also send it home with your dinner guests or leave it as a gift for your co-workers. Hopefully someone will return the favor in your future without bread pudding!

Thawing and reheating frozen bread pudding

You don’t want to try to heat up your frozen bread pudding, so it’s a good idea to let it thaw in the fridge overnight before you’re ready to eat it.

If you notice that it seems more difficult than you remember, it is normal and fine. Heating it up will soften it, especially if you pour in some delicious sauce while you’re at it.

To heat it, you can use the microwave or your oven. On the first, go slow, with 10-second bursts. If you cook it too long at a time, it will get tough. In the oven, it will reheat well in about 10 minutes at 350F. Place on a baking sheet and drizzle sauce, if any, over bread before heating.

If you find that it is still a little dry, no matter how careful you have been, or if it does not have sauce, the best solution we have found is a scoop of ice cream!

More options for storing bread pudding

Freezing your bread pudding is not your only option, however it is the best option for long-term storage. If you only need to store it for a few days, or you don’t have freezer space for treats, we have a few more tricks up our sleeve for you.

Storing bread pudding in your refrigerator

If you have a great sauce, or plan to eat it with ice cream, you may have an extra day or two to store it in your fridge.

Simple and sweet, you can keep your pudding in the fridge. It will last well in your refrigerator for 1 to 2 days, but longer and will start to dry out.

Recycled bread pudding

If you had leftover bread pudding left over, but you don’t necessarily want to eat the same dessert again, there are a few ways you can change it up just enough to make it feel brand new. Here are some of our favorite ideas:

    Make French toast

How you cook it will depend on how moist the leftovers are. If they’re a little dry, just use a regular egg sauce and fry it, but if it’s still quite a bit creamy, you’ll want to be forgiving of how much egg you use. Also, remember that it’s already sweet and spicy, so you won’t need more in your egg sauce.

    Haz cake pops.

Coat it with some buttercream frosting (you really won’t need much if your pudding is still pretty wet) and shape into balls. Top with a delicious fudge sauce and enjoy a whole new decadent dessert in the form of cake pops.     Grill.

Similar to French toast, grill your bread pudding slices until toasted and top with jam or ice cream.     Fry it.

Definitely not the healthiest option, but a total hit at local fairgrounds and nothing short of delicious!

How to Make a Delicious Easy Bread Pudding

Bread pudding is really simple and can be made with just a few ingredients. You can also get creative and add extras to change the flavors and make it a new dessert every time you make it.

Basic ingredients

    2 cups of milk

    2 tablespoons melted butter

½ loaf of stale bread, or roughly the equivalent of what you have

    1/3 cup sugar

    2 eggs beaten

    Pinch of salt

Extra flavor ideas

Fresh, canned, or dried fruit of almost any variety ,     Spices, such as nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, or allspice,     Treats like chocolate or caramel chips or pieces of chocolate bars ,     Liquors like Kahlua, Ron or Bourbon

Instead, make it flavorful, using a little bacon grease or cheese.

Prepare a 9 x 13 baking dish by spraying it with cooking spray or coating it with a little butter.

Preheat your oven to 350F ,     Cut or toss the bread into bite-size pieces, about 1 to 2 inches, and place in a large bowl.     Combine all of your ingredients except the bread and any extra fruit or solids you are adding.     Pour the mixture over your bread and let it soak for 10 minutes.

Add your fruit or other goodies and mix well, it should be soggy and a little doughy.    Place your pudding in the baking dish and bake for 30 to 45 minutes, checking that it sets and browns, but does not burn or dry out.

Let your bread pudding cool before serving. Enjoy!

Make a sauce for your pudding

There are endless sauces you can make for your bread pudding, but our favorite is a cream cheese-style sauce that makes your bread pudding like a cinnamon roll.

    8 oz cream cheese

    2 butter spoons

    ½ cup of sugar

    ½ teaspoon vanilla

In a microwave safe bowl, combine all ingredients except vanilla

Microwave until cream cheese is completely melted, using 30 second bursts and mixing very well between them.
